What childhood amnesia is.
Most adults cannot remember much before age three or four. This is not a flaw. It is a feature of how the developing brain works.
The hippocampus is the brain's memory center. It is still maturing in early childhood. It does not fully develop the ability to form long term autobiographical memories until around age four to six.
Young children also lack the language skills to encode memories with words. A memory without words is harder to retrieve later. As language develops, memory becomes more durable.
What children do remember.
Children remember different things than adults do.
They remember emotion. A feeling of joy, fear, or surprise can stick even when the details fade. This is why a child might feel anxious about a doctor's office without remembering the specific visit that caused the fear.
They remember routine. Predictable sequences become scripts in the brain. Bath, book, bed. These scripts help children navigate the world.
They remember big events. A birthday party with a special cake. A visit from a beloved grandparent. An unexpected event that broke the routine.
They do not remember most daily details. What they ate for breakfast last Tuesday. Which shoes they wore. These fade quickly.
What this means for parents.
Do not worry that they won't remember. They will remember how you made them feel, even if they do not remember the specific moment.
Talk about the day. Narrating what happened helps encode memories with words. "Remember when we went to the park and you climbed the big slide?"
Use photos and videos. Looking back at pictures helps children reconstruct memories. Ask them "What were we doing here? How did you feel?"
Do not take it personally. When your child forgets something you told them an hour ago, it is not defiance. Their memory system is still under construction.
What this means for learning.
Children learn through repetition. Not because they are not paying attention. Because their brains need multiple exposures to move information from short term memory to long term memory.
This is why reading the same book every night is valuable. Why watching the same episode multiple times is not a problem. Repetition is how young brains build durable memories.

Stress affects memory formation. High stress levels can impair the brain's ability to encode new memories. This is one reason why children who experience chronic stress or trauma may have gaps in their early memories.
A calm, safe environment is the best foundation for healthy memory development.
What parents can do to support memory.
Create routines. Predictable sequences help children encode the passage of time and the order of events.
Ask open ended questions. "What was your favorite part of the park?" instead of "Did you have fun at the park?" Open ended questions invite retrieval practice.
Tell family stories. Share memories from when you were little. This teaches children that remembering is a valued activity.
Be patient with forgetfulness. Your child is not trying to frustrate you. Their brain is still learning how to hold onto information.
